I think that learning martial arts with a group in a dojo is best, but sometimes it’s just easier to get started at home. If you have kids it can also be fun to watch some videos and have them duplicate the moves with you. Most kids love Ninjas and Ninja turtles and it’s not too hard to get them interested in training if you keep it fun !
I found a few courses on the net that I think are good to help learning at home and have given them scores.
There are just HEAPS of good videos here that show you techniques and moves. Videos are great because you can see exactly how to perform moves and replay them whenever you need to. There’s also a heap of information covering stretching, aerobics and nutrition. You can probably find a lot of this extra information about on the net, but it’s great to have it all in one place. I’ve made this my number one choice of home training, but for smaller kids, it’s worthwhile having a look at the third product below too.

Samurai’s have a mystique about them that’s hard to beat, and this course has 150 videos and a curriculum that’s delivered to you module by module each month. It’s a bit pricy at $37 USD each month, but you can cancel at any time if you find it’s not delivering what you want.
You can find out more about the Aikijutsu Acadamy Here
| Price – 3/5 | Quality – 4/5 | Usefulness – 4/5 | Value – 4/5 | Total Score – 15/20 |
If you want to learn a martial art with your kids this is a great book full of ideas, drills and games. It’s written with a martial arts instructor in mind, and showing him how training can be don without losing the kids interest. But the techniques and exercises can be done by you with your kids, even if you’re not a trained instructor.
Even though I’ve ranked Martial Arts for Kids at 3rd place it’s definitely worth using with small kids. It doesn’t have any videos though, which is why it comes in 3rd.

When you’re practicing any style of martial arts or self defence program then probably the most important techniques which everyone must study is how to punch properly plus how to generate power so that you can punch an opponent hard and fast. Of course there are a multitude of different techniques which you could use , but there are also a few universal principles which you can apply that will assist you with the majority of them , and so that’s the subject of the current article which I have put together for anyone who wishes to learn how to punch harder .
One important factor which readers must think about before any attempt to increase punching power is that you should not forget about precision . You might feel that strength is all important and that if you is able to hit someonehard then you will always hurt them , but you could actually find you’re hurting your own hand even more . supposing that you strike an adversary hard on their forehead with your fist, in the normal way , then you are fairly likely to break the joints in your knuckles, and you’re overwhelmingly unlikely to cause them any real harm let alone any injury that will win a fight . On the other hand, if you strike someone right on the snozzle then there is a good chance that you will hurt them a fair bit even if you don’t punch them especially Powerfully . Hitting with your palm can help to reduce the problem , but you should be careful to still throw a proper strike with the heel of the palm, and not a slap that might Ehurt but won’t do much to win you the confrontation .
When you learn how to punch harder you should be aware of your whole body, starting from the feet and working upwards . Your feet would ideally be in the most solid stance that is available. Visualize yourself standing on a perfect square, with your feet at opposing corners so there is an equal separation front to back as left to right . Push yourself forwards with your rear leg as you throw your punch , stepping forwards if it is possible or else using this force to twist your body into the strike .
Remember to keep your whole body as loose and relaxed as possible , because this serves to eliminate counter-force and increase Epower and speed , and only tense all of your muscles when you land the punch.
And the most important tip of the lot - do not forget about protecting yourself , even when attacking! While you are actually punching yourself you’re more vulnerable than any other time as it’s more difficult to evade an attack and you are at greater risk of being floored if you are hit. Make sure to keep your opposing hand in a guard position and if you can then tuck your chin down behind the inside of the shoulder of your punching arm as a defense .
Some of the author’s other martial arts articles: best martial arts for self defense and how to use nunchucks
A result of learning a martial art is the self-confidence that it gives people, which is great for adults, but even better to see in kids. When you’re a kid, situations and other people can often look a lot more forbidding and overwhelming, and being confident that they CAN be in control of an environment and look after themselves ( and friends ) can extravert a young person an incredible amount.
Martial arts have always had the self-defense and discipline aspects, and more and more they’ve developed a recreational/tournament aspect over the years, but it needs to be promoted far more that learning Karate, or Tai Kwonda or kickboxing or most martial arts can provide the family unity that so many families look for.
